However, there were some really great threesome scenes once we finally got to that section in this book. Though while A Dowry of Blood leaned more dark romance, this one was definitely more vampire/creature hunting horror. Well, I am on an unexpected roll (decidedly not purposeful, but I’m very much not complaining) with polyamorous vampire reads. And his complicated growing feelings towards Xiaodan *and* Zidan might, in fact, be reciprocated by both. As the mystery around the Rot unfolds, he realizes that he hasn’t been told the full story by his father. As the three spend time together, Remy learns not just more about his own family’s reputation and history, but about himself as well. When the two request that he join them in their efforts to hunt down the source of the virus that is causing this horrible new vampire mutation (dubbed “the Rot”), he decides to go with them, despite myriad reservations about associating with vampires that closely. Xiaodan Song is a vampire heiress with a uniquely terrifying (for vampires) gift and her partner, Zidan Malekh, is an ancient and powerful vampire lord. When Remy is sent out to hunt down a new, and especially terrifying, breed of vampire, he crosses paths with some others who have the same goal. Remy Pendergast is a very well-known and extremely successful vampire hunter, if not a particularly popular one (what with his father’s terrible reputation and the rumors about his mother’s relationships leading many to questions about if he is half-vampire himself).

Themes of conquering fear and believing in oneself are woven throughout, along with an acknowledgment of humans’ environmental impact on the sea and its inhabitants. Readers will eagerly await future volumes and the answers they will provide."- VOYA Quick-witted, loveable characters and a well-planned fantasy world make this an all-encompassing book. Friendship, trust, and responsibility are major themes as Sera struggles to grasp that she is really her kingdom’s only hope. Donnelly then adds layers of complexity to the tale and weaves her story into that of Atlantis. It starts with a common enough concept: a royal girl who is worried about her betrothal and about love. "A fantastic addition to the genre of mermaids, this book will also appeal to readers of action and those who appreciate usurped leaders taking back their kingdom. It was released in book form the following year to smashing success, selling a million and a half copies that same year. Over the course of the book, Paul himself is injured and hospitalized, goes home on leave and returns to the front, only to be killed a week or so before the armistice in 1918.įrom November 10 to December 9, 1928, All Quiet on the Western Front was published in serial form in Vossische Zeitung magazine. The story opens in 1917, when half of Baumer’s company-many of them schoolmates from back in Germany-has been killed in battle. The protagonist of that novel, All Quiet on the Western Front–its German title, Im Westen nichts Neues literally translates as In the West Nothing New–is Paul Baumer, a young German soldier fighting in the trenches of World War I. Returning to Germany after the war, he changed his name back to the French spelling and worked various jobs–teacher, stonecutter, race-car driver, sports journalist–while working on his first novel. Remarque (born Erich Paul Remark) was born in 1898 in lower Saxony to a family of French ancestry he enlisted in the German army at the age of 18 and headed to fight on the Western Front, where he was wounded five times, the last time seriously. On November 10, 1928, the first installment of All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque’s acclaimed novel of World War I, appears in the German magazine Vossische Zeitung. The title of the book came from, as I’d expected before even opening it, To Kill a Mockingbird, which instantly endeared me to it, as TKAM is one of my all-time favorite books. Devon was the one who helped Caitlin function more normally, explained why people acted and reacted the way they did, and generally was just a terrific older brother to her (the kind you’d desperately hope you had if you had a child with special needs). mockingbird by kathryn erskineĬaitlin is ten years old and has Asperger’s syndrome, so she reacts differently to the death of her brother, Devon, then other people might. The author, Kathryn Erskine, lives in Virginia and in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shootings, she wrote this book about a girl dealing with the death of her brother (although he was shot in a middle school, rather than at a college). And yet this book is impressively upbeat, without seeming forced. Look, if you want to talk about a book that has a downer of a premise, it’s this one. I was far more impressed with this book than I expected to be. 9 of 10: Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine, about a girl with Asperger’s syndrome whose brother was recently killed in a school shooting, manages to be meaningful, appropriate, and even (surprisingly) funny. I mean it’s got everything from serial killers to shady business deals. In fact, I’d say that this story is just as much a suspenseful thriller as it is a romance novel. Having said that, Beautiful Disaster is an excellent choice for someone like me who doesn’t really have any expectations when it comes to plot, characters, or dialogue. So what you’re getting is an honest opinion from a reader with no preconceived notions. While I do like to indulge on occasion, which is why I check Smart Bitches, Trashy Books for recommendations, I’m more of a transgressive fiction girl myself. And Flynn's return ignites an achingly powerful tale about the most enduring love, one that is greater than honor, or friendship, or the passing of time.īefore I share my thoughts about Beautiful Disaster, I feel like I should probably mention that romance isn’t really my genre of choice. In a story filled with sweetness and suspense, Mia's what-ifs are endless. Mia keeps a bedside vigil- terrified that he will die, awestruck at the prospect of his survival. Now back in her life and in the hospital, Flynn is gravely injured. Mia Wells's eco-friendly career goals are about to become a reality-but her life-altering moment is interrupted when an unexpected call ushers in her tremulous past. This story was nominated in the Best First Book category. Moreno-Garcia uses the tropes of a romance novel juxtaposed with noir to create dissonance, just like how the student protests created ripples in Mexico that still reverberate to this very day. Then there is Leonora who gets involved in the student movement through her university, but her wealth enables her to get out of tricky situations, like being followed by government agents.Īt its core, Velvet Was the Night is a novel about the clashes of Mexico’s political and cultural landscape of the ’70s. Maite, despite her lower-middle-class status, manages to live independently during a time when women were expected to stay at home with their parents or get married. The novel describes in great detail the flaws and insecurities that make the two main characters, Leonora and Maite, human, while juxtaposing the gulf between their lives as members of different social classes of the stratified Mexican society. Author of the acclaimed novel Mexican Gothic, Moreno-Garcia breaks the Latinx stereotypes of the poor immigrant, the sexy Latina, or the delinquent in the media by providing a microscopic examination of the characters in this noir novel. The book draws on the whole range of Mill's philosophical writings and on his correspondence with, among others, Harriet Taylor Mill, Auguste Comte, and Alexander Bain to show that Mill's underlying goal was to replace the traditional religious basis of society with a form of secular religion that would rest on moral authority, individual restraint, and social control. Hamburger offers this powerful challenge to conventional scholarship by presenting Mill's views on liberty in the context of his ideas about, in particular, religion and historical development. He shows that Mill, far from being an advocate of a maximum degree of liberty, was an advocate of liberty and control-indeed a degree of control ultimately incompatible with liberal ideals. By examining Mill's arguments in On Liberty in light of his other writings, however, Joseph Hamburger reveals a Mill very different from the "saint of rationalism" so central to liberal thought. John Stuart Mill is one of the hallowed figures of the liberal tradition, revered for his defense of liberal principles and expansive personal liberty. |
